- Soak the Canvas: Submerge the canvas top completely in a tub or large bucket of clean, lukewarm water. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes so the water fully penetrates the tightly woven threads. Do not use soap or chemicals.
- Drain, Don't Wring: Pull the canvas out and let the excess water drain off naturally. Avoid twisting or wringing the fabric aggressively, as this can distort the shape or stress the stitch lines.
- Fit it Wet: While the canvas is damp and highly pliable, carefully drape it over your tent frame. Start by aligning the main corners and the peak, then gently pull the canvas down into its correct position. The wet material will stretch much more easily than dry canvas.
- Fasten & Secure: Once the tent is in position, fully close all zippers. If you leave the doors or windows unzipped while it dries, the canvas can shrink tightly around the openings, making it extremely difficult to zip them shut later.
- Dry Completely on the Frame: Leave the tent fully erected on the frame until it is 100% dry. As it dries, the canvas will naturally "set" and mold perfectly to the exact dimensions of the frame.

Why this is important (The "Seasoning" Bonus)Beyond just making the initial setup possible, wetting your canvas for the first time is a standard practice known as seasoning or weathering. When the cotton threads absorb water, they swell up. When they dry, they lock tightly together. This process permanently seals the tiny needle holes left behind from the factory sewing machines, making your Westfalia tent completely watertight for your future camping trips!
